RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please place on the April 23rd agenda a referral to the Design Review board, directing the administration to work with the Board on the developing updated citywide design guidelines for parklets. These guidelines should balance the individuality of business with the need for a coherent and visually harmonious Miami Beach aesthetic.
The updated guidelines should draw from the principles established in the Parklet Design Guidelines (see exhibit A pages 9-13) —specifically the emphasis on high-quality, consistent materials, visual transparency, pedestrian activation, and design uniformity. As in the parklet program, which sets standards for consistent dimensions, materials, signage, lighting, and furnishings while still encouraging creativity, the updated design framework should allow businesses flexibility within clear aesthetic parameters.
The new guidelines should be in place and enforced at the time of business contract renewals, ensuring a seamless transition for existing operators and new applicants. This effort will contribute to economic vitality, enhanced public realm experiences, and a visually cohesive streetscape that reflects the charm and sophistication of Miami Beach.
