COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
RECOMMENDATION
Please place on the April 23, 2025 City Commission agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life committee to discuss providing the City Administration with direction to identify appropriate locations for the installation of speed humps and/or speed tables in the Flamingo Park neighborhood. The Flamingo Park neighborhood has experienced an increase in traffic volume and speeding, leading to concerns about pedestrian safety, particularly for residents, children, and visitors utilizing Flamingo Park and its surrounding streets. As such, in LTC No. 143-2025, the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association expressed a desire for traffic calming measures to mitigate these issues and create a safer environment for its residents and visitors.
Speed humps and speed tables are traffic safety tools designed to slow traffic speeds, improve pedestrian safety, and reduce the risk of accidents on roadways. Although the Slow Streets 2.0 pilot is moving forward, public safety is of the utmost importance in the City and drivers who speed, or engage in reckless or careless driving, unnecessarily endanger lives.
As part of the approval of this referral, I would request that the City Administration is directed to evaluate current traffic patterns, solicit community input, and identify strategic locations where speed humps and/or speed tables should be installed to enhance public safety and improve neighborhood livability. I would further request that the Administration be prepared at Committee to discuss its findings and recommended locations for the installation of speed calming infrastructure within the Flamingo Park neighborhood, along with any costs or concerns associated with such installations.
