BACKGROUND/HISTORY
ANALYSIS
Please place on the May 21, 2025 agenda a referral to the Land Use and Sustainability Committee to discuss the integration of resiliency features into new and existing City park and greenspace projects. As our community continues to face the increasing impacts of climate change and sea level rise, it is critical that our public spaces be designed and improved with resiliency and sustainability at the forefront.
The Cityโs Environment and Sustainability Department is currently in the process of developing a guidance document (the โE&S Guidance Documentโ) for use during its internal review of City projects. This document, which is in draft form and attached to this referral, consolidates applicable City Commission resolutions, ordinances, policies, and best practices relevant to resilience and sustainability in capital projects.
I would like for the Committee hear a presentation from the Environment and Sustainability Department on the E&S Guidance Document and discuss opportunities for incorporating the recommended resiliency features into City park and greenspace initiatives. I also request that staff provide any recommendations for potential legislative action that would support or codify these best practices to ensure consistency across current and future projects.
This discussion will help reinforce our Cityโs ongoing commitment to building a resilient, adaptive, and environmentally responsible Miami Beach.
