COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:
May 21, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE โ€“ DISCUSSION ON REINTRODUCING SAILING-RELATED EVENTS TO MIAMI BEACH.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

While Miami Beach has previously hosted sailing-related events, it has been many years since such events have taken place within our city limits. Given our unique coastal geography and maritime history, reviving competitive or exhibition sailing events could significantly enhance the Cityโ€™s cultural and recreational offerings.

Sailing events have proven to be successful in neighboring communities across South Florida, including the Southernmost Regatta in Key West, RS Fest Miami 2025 in Coconut Grove, the Annual Regatta hosted by the Key Biscayne Yacht Club, and the Coral Reef Yacht Club Regatta Event. Additionally, the international SailGP competition and The Ocean Race exemplify the global draw and economic impact of high-profile sailing events.

ANALYSIS

Please place on the May 21, 2025, agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (the โ€œCommitteeโ€) to discuss the potential reintroduction of sailing- related events to the City of Miami Beach.

Reintroducing sailing events to Miami Beach would not only serve to reconnect the community with its waterfront identity but could also attract international attention, tourism, and economic activity. These events appeal to a diverse audienceโ€”from amateur sailors to global enthusiastsโ€” and offer opportunities for public-private partnerships, youth engagement, and environmental education.

The Committee should explore potential locations, logistical considerations (including permitting and safety), outreach to sailing organizations and yacht clubs, and coordination with City departments and stakeholders. Additionally, the Administration should evaluate Miami Beachโ€™s capacity and infrastructure to host events of varying sizes.
