ANALYSIS
Please place an item on the July 24, 2024 agenda to discuss and, if necessary, take action, regarding engagement by the Administration with the Florida Department of Transportation (“FDOT”) to discuss the possibility of reinstating the Alton Road Reconstruction Project.
On March 13, 2024, the Commission adopted Resolution No. 2024-32960 urging FDOT to phase and/ or reschedule the start date for the future Alton Road Reconstruction project from the North Michigan Avenue to East of Allison Road (the “Alton Road Project”), until the completion of the I- 395/ SR 836/ 1- 95 Signature Bridge project and the Venetian Causeway Bridge Replacement project to avoid further impacts to traffic entering and exiting Miami Beach. FDOT agreed to the City’s request and has removed the Alton Road Project form its five-year plan.
The unprecedented flooding caused by tropical disturbance Invest 90L in certain areas of the City, including some segments of Alton Road, has shed new light on the importance of resiliency projects such as the Alton Road Project. I would like for the Administration to be prepared to discuss at the Commission meeting what steps have been taken, and what additional efforts could be made, to discuss with FDOT the reinstatement of Alton Road Project.
