COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Mayor Steven Meiner
DATE:
May 21, 2025
TITLE:
DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION – UPDATE FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ON SECURITY PLANNING TO PREVENT MASS ATTACKS.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

The City is a densely populated urban area that is home to approximately 80,000 residents and hosts throngs of visitors each day. As a result, the City’s streets and public spaces are consistently busy and crowded, and the protection of the health, safety and general welfare of the City's residents and visitors is the most fundamental and important function performed by the City. However, it’s an unfortunate reality that recent mass attacks, including those perpetrated by active shooters and persons using vehicles as weapons, have killed and injured dozens of innocent civilians in the public spaces of other cities.

Accordingly, to the extent any such information can be provided without compromising or divulging any sensitive information, I would like a general update from the Police Department regarding the City’s security planning to prevent such mass attacks from occurring in the City, so that my colleagues and I may discuss, and act, as we deem necessary in furtherance of this critical initiative.
