COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
TITLE:
DISCUSS THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH'S PREPARATION FOR EXTREME RAIN EVENTS.
RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
In June 2024, the City of Miami Beach experienced what was described as a โ1-in-200 yearโ rain event, receiving an extraordinary 13.64 inches of rainfall over a 48-hour period. This resulted in widespread flooding well outside typical weather patterns.
More recently, in early April 2025, the city endured another extreme weather eventโreferred to as a โrain bombโโwhich brought 6.5 inches of rain in just one hour. In this case, many residents not only faced flooding, but also sustained damage to their vehicles.
In both instances, it appeared that the city was caught off guard and lacked adequate preparedness. I would like the City of Miami Beach to address how we can improve our response to such extreme weather events moving forward. Specifically:
Who is responsible for monitoring and responding to forecasted rain events?
Where are the highest elevation areas in the city that residents can use to safely park their vehicles when garages begin to flood?
Additionally, we have received complaints regarding the ongoing work on Indian Creek, which has reportedly created an incline that causes water to drain onto Collins Avenue. I would appreciate an update on any plans to address and correct this issue.
Weโve also received similar concerns about the recently completed Maurice Gibb Park, where an incline appears to be contributing to runoff and drainage problems. What steps can be taken to remediate this situation?
