COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:
June 25, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE – DISCUSSION ON REVIVING EMPLOYEE SHUTTLE PROGRAM AND OTHER TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS FOR FONTAINEBLEAU HOTEL STAFF.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

The Fontainebleau Hotel is a significant employer in Miami Beach, yet a relatively low number of its employees are residents of the city. This situation contributes to increased traffic congestion as staff commute from other areas. Addressing this issue could improve local employment rates and reduce traffic congestion.

ANALYSIS

Please place on the June 25 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (the β€œCommittee”) to discuss the possible revival of the employee shuttle program and other transportation solutions and initiatives for Fontainebleau Hotel staff. . I recently met with the General Manager of the Fontainebleau and raised concerns about the low number of Miami Beach residents employed by the hotel, as well as the traffic impact caused by their staff commuting. He connected me with their HR department to explore the possibility of reviving an old employee shuttle program they had in place years ago. This initiative will not entail any financial contribution by the City.

Reviving the employee shuttle program and exploring other transportation solutions, such as carpool incentives, could provide multiple benefits. These measures would not only ease traffic congestion but also support the hotel's efforts to employ more Miami Beach residents. The HR department of the Fontainebleau is open to discussing these possibilities and finding creative solutions to the transportation challenges faced by their staff. In addition, the City should find ways to work with the Fontainebleau to help promote the hiring of more City residents.

FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT

This initiative will not entail any financial contribution by the City.

Does this Ordinance require a Business Impact Estimate? (FOR ORDINANCES ONLY)

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

CONCLUSION

The Committee should discuss the potential revival of the employee shuttle program and other transportation solutions for the Fontainebleau Hotel staff, as well as any initiatives the City could help to promote to enable the Fontainebleau to attract and hire more City residents.
