COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS USING PORTION OF THE LOG CABIN FOR COMMUNITY PANTRY WITH FRIDGE.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

ANALYSIS

Please place on the June 25, 2025 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to evaluate the feasibility of dedicating a portion of the Log Cabin to house a permanent food pantry and community fridge for North Beach residents experiencing food insecurity.

Over the past several months I have participated in multiple food distributions in North Beach and have been struck by the large number of our residents experiencing food insecurity, confirming a clear and growing need. Although a community fridge once operated in the area, it was removed after repeated vandalism.

Several local grocery stores have been generously donating food that volunteers collect and distribute to families and individuals each week. However, without a secure, climate-controlled location this model is not sustainable. The Log Cabin site in North Beach, whose long-term use is still under discussion, could be well-suited to serve as a community pantry. As the City moves forward with the reconstruction and restoration of the Log Cabin, I would like to propose for a portion of the cabin to be used to accommodate a modest pantry space and fridge that would safeguard donations and allow consistent, dignified access for families in need.
