COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Joseph Magazine
DATE:
July 23, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION REGARDING AN INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAM ENGAGING SENIORS TO READ TO OR TEACH FOREIGN LANGUAGE(S) TO YOUNG STUDENTS WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.

RECOMMENDATION

Please refer a discussion to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee ("PSNQLC") to discuss/take action regarding the development of an intergenerational educational engagement program in which seniors would volunteer to read to or teach foreign language(s) to young students at Miami Beach schools.

This initiative aims to foster meaningful cross-generational connections, enhance educational outcomes, and support community-building efforts. The program could initially pilot at South Pointe Elementary, located in close proximity to Rebecca Towers, allowing for convenient access and engagement by participating senior residents.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

ANALYSIS

The partnership would: β€’ Enhance literacy and multilingual education opportunities for children. β€’ Promote a sense of purpose and community involvement among seniors. β€’ Leverage existing resources to strengthen neighborhood ties and well-being. I would like the committee to discuss and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission on how best to support and implement this initiative, including identifying potential program partners and resources necessary for successful launch and sustainability.
