A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE REQUEST FOR A WAIVER OF MIAMI BEACH CONVENTION CENTER RENTAL FEES FOR THE ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC PARISH CENTENNIAL, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $32,390, FOR USE OF THE SUNSET VISTA BALLROOM IN CONNECTION WITH THE CELEBRATION OF THE PARISH’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY TO BE HELD ON MAY 29-30, 2026.

RECOMMENDATION

The Administration recommends the approval and authorization of a Miami Beach Convention Center rental fee waiver for the St. Patrick Catholic Parish Centennial.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

In November 2018, the City of Miami Beach established Miami Beach Convention Center (β€œMBCC”) Rental Waiver Guidelines including an application, review and approval process. The waiver is administered by the City Administration, upon a recommendation and approval of the Mayor and City Commission.

The rental discount/waiver is specific to room and space rental fees only. The event producer/organizer is solely responsible for any and all other associated MBCC fees as assessed for the event, including but not limited to, audio, visual, utilities, furniture rentals, equipment, security, food and beverage, corkage fees, room set-up and cleaning.

The City received an application for a rental fee waiver for the use of the MBCC. The application has a resident community impact and civic benefit to the residents of Miami Beach.

St. Patrick Catholic Parish has been an integral part of the Miami Beach community since its inception in 1926. The church's journey began with a generous donation from Carl G. Fisher, a prominent Miami Beach developer, who provided five polo stables to Father Barry for use as a Parish and school. The first mass was held in a refurbished stable on June 2, 1926, marking the birth of Miami Beach Catholicism. Despite the devastation caused by a violent hurricane on September 17, 1926, which destroyed the Parish and school buildings, Father Barry and the parishioners' resilience led to the swift repair and opening of the school just two weeks later.

The hurricane only strengthened Father Barry's resolve to establish a permanent Parish and school structure. By 1928, a site between 39th and 40th Streets was chosen, and plans for new structures, including a Parish, rectory, convent, school, recreation hall, and auditorium, were set in motion. The cornerstone for the Parish was laid on February 22, 1928. During World War II, the church played a crucial role by allowing the army to use all parish facilities, positively impacting the community and filling Sunday services to capacity. Over the years, St. Patrick Catholic Parish has not only served as a place of worship but also as a community hub, providing support and services during critical times.

ANALYSIS

The 100th anniversary celebration of St. Patrick Catholic Church is a significant milestone that underscores the church's enduring presence and impact on the Miami Beach community. With an expected attendance of 1,200 people, this event will bring together residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community and continuity. The celebration will highlight the church's rich history and its role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of Miami Beach.

By commemorating the church's centennial, the city not only honors its past but also reinforces its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. This celebration will undoubtedly strengthen the community's bonds and enhance the city's appeal as a destination for both residents and tourists.

The St. Partick Parish Centennial will be held in Sunset Vista Ballroom of the MBCC from May 29-30, 2026, including event load-in and load-out. St. Partick Catholic Parish has requested that the City waive MBCC rental fees in an amount not to exceed $32,390. St. Patrick Catholic Parish has satisfied the MBCC rental waiver application criteria by providing a resident community impact through its delivery of services to the residents of Miami Beach.

MBCC rental waiver application documents and requirements include, but are not limited to, proof of not-for-profit status, event budget, and additional sponsors.

FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT

The waiver, if approved, is valued at $32,390, and reflects a loss of MBCC revenue.
