DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION: CONSIDERATION OF CLOSING AND REPURPOSING 12TH STREET WEST OF MICHIGAN AVENUE FOR USE AS A LOCATION FOR THE NEW FIRE STATION 1 PROJECT AND INITIATION OF A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP EXPLORATION PROCESS.

RECOMMENDATION

In light of item C7AF which proposes removing the location on the western boundary of Flamingo Park fronting Alton Road between 11th Street and 12th Street from consideration as a potential site for Fire Station 1, I would like to propose directing the City Administration to consider the feasibility of a street closure on the segment of 12th Street located west of Michigan Avenue, and repurposing the street and rights of way for the development of the new Fire Station 1 facility. This location may offer strategic advantages in terms of accessibility, response times, and integration with surrounding infrastructure. Additionally, this may support a broader effort to provide additional safety protections to the Flamingo West single family residential neighborhood.

I would like to also propose directing the City Administration to issue a formal Request for Letters of Interest (β€œRFLI”) to commercial property owners within the City. The purpose of the RFLI would be to identify parties interested in collaborating with the City through a public-private partnership model to facilitate the construction of the Project at a suitable site. This approach will allow the City to evaluate a broader range of viable locations and partnership opportunities that align with operational needs and long-term planning goals.
