COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please place the above item on the City Commission agenda as a referral to the Land Use and Sustainability Committee (โLUSCโ).
Green space on both public and private property is essential to enhancing the livability, resilience, and economic vitality of Miami Beach. Increased access to parks, tree canopy, and natural landscapes promotes community health, reduces the urban heat island effect, and attracts residents and visitors.
Additionally, sustainable landscaping practices and pollution reduction effortsโincluding stormwater management, air quality improvements, and the responsible use of materialsโ support the Cityโs climate adaptation goals and environmental stewardship.
I would like the LUSC to review existing City policies and consider amendments that: โข expand public green spaces throughout the City, โข encourage open green space on private property, โข promote sustainable landscaping practices that conserve water, protect biodiversity, and minimize chemical use, and โข reduce local pollution sources.
