COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez
DATE:
September 3, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE LAND USE AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE - REVIEW AND CONSIDER AMENDMENTS TO CITY POLICIES TO PRIORITIZE EXPANDING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE GREEN SPACE, ENCOURAGE SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING, AND REDUCE POLLUTION.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Please place the above item on the City Commission agenda as a referral to the Land Use and Sustainability Committee (โ€œLUSCโ€).

Green space on both public and private property is essential to enhancing the livability, resilience, and economic vitality of Miami Beach. Increased access to parks, tree canopy, and natural landscapes promotes community health, reduces the urban heat island effect, and attracts residents and visitors.

Additionally, sustainable landscaping practices and pollution reduction effortsโ€”including stormwater management, air quality improvements, and the responsible use of materialsโ€” support the Cityโ€™s climate adaptation goals and environmental stewardship.

I would like the LUSC to review existing City policies and consider amendments that: โ€ข expand public green spaces throughout the City, โ€ข encourage open green space on private property, โ€ข promote sustainable landscaping practices that conserve water, protect biodiversity, and minimize chemical use, and โ€ข reduce local pollution sources.
