TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE INSTALLATION OF AN OFFICIAL HISTORICAL MARKER AT 1801 BAY ROAD, MIAMI BEACH- THE FORMER SITE OF MIDDLE EAR STUDIO, FOUNDED BY THE BEE GEES.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Please place on the July 23, 2025 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to consider the installation of an official historical marker at 1801 Bay Road, Miami Beachβ€”the former site of Middle Ear Studio, founded by the Bee Gees.

The Bee Gees, comprised of brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb, rose to global prominence in the late 1970s following their contributions to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which propelled them to the top of the charts worldwide. Their fusion of pop, soul, and disco not only defined an era of music but also left an indelible mark on popular culture.

In recognition of Maurice Gibb’s ties to the City, Miami Beach dedicated Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, a family-friendly green space featuring a music-themed playground and waterfront walkway. The park, situated just a block from the former studio site, was a favored retreat for Barry and Maurice during recording breaks, underscoring the group’s deep connection to the community and local culture.

Middle Ear Studio was established in 1980 by the Bee Gees as a state-of-the-art recording facility located at 1801 Bay Road in Miami Beach. It served as the creative hub where the group and numerous artists tracked seminal works over 25 years before closing in 2005. Should the Committee approve this proposal, City staff should contact the current owner of 1801 Bay Road to secure written permission for marker placement prior to initiating the application process for a historical marker with the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
