COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez
DATE:

TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE - EXPLORE LAUNCHING A DIGITAL PLATFORM AND/OR HOSTING COMMUNITY EVENTS TO ALLOW CITY RESIDENTS TO REGULARLY SUBMIT AND DISCUSS URBAN IMPROVEMENT IDEAS AND INCORPORATE CIVIC TECHNOLOGY AS PART OF THE CITYโ€™S DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Please place the above item on the City Commission meeting agenda as a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (โ€œPSNQLCโ€).

I would like the PSNQLC to discuss creating a structured and accessible forum to allow City residents to regularly submit and discuss ideas to improve our urban environment. This could include both a digital platform as well as in-person community events. Civic technology is the use of digital technology to enhance interactions between people and government. A dedicated โ€œcivic techโ€ forum would allow residents to provide valuable insights into how we can improve the Cityโ€™s public spaces, infrastructure, mobility, and quality of life. This would promote access to City government, enhance transparency, and foster creative problem-solving between residents and City staff.

As part of this referral, I ask that the PSNQLC look at initiatives like the โ€œGive a Minuteโ€ campaign deployed in Chicago in 2010, and any similar civic technology models that could enhance public engagement in Miami Beach.
