COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
RECOMMENDATION
Please place on the September 3, 2025 City Commission agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (“PSNQLC”) to discuss potential additional steps the City can take to increase iguana remediation.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
The City continues to face challenges from the significant iguana population, which adversely impacts public and private property, infrastructure, and the quality of life of residents despite the City’s ongoing iguana remediation efforts. This is particularly evidenced by the complaints the City continues to receive from residents regarding the proliferation of iguanas in their neighborhoods.
Presently, it’s my understanding that the City has a $435,000 annual budget allocation for iguana remediation in FY 2025 and FY 2026, which funding is primarily utilized to pay its contractor, Blue Iguana, for iguana remediation services on public property as the City doesn’t fund or conduct iguana remediation on private property. However, through its agreement with Blue Iguana, the City has arranged for residents to obtain iguana remediation services on their private properties at a discounted rate from Blue Iguana.
Moreover, the City Commission previously established the Ad Hoc Iguana Remediation Advisory Committee (the “Iguana Remediation Committee”) to review the City’s iguana remediation efforts and provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission regarding appropriate actions and funding levels. Like the residents’ iguana proliferation concerns, the Iguana Remediation Committee passed two (2) different motions, in February 2025 and May 2025, respectively, and in each motion requested additional funding over the existing $435,000 annual budget allocation.
Accordingly, I would request that the City Administration be prepared at Committee to discuss, and provide its recommendation, concerning potential additional steps the City can take, along with any associated costs, to increase and enhance iguana remediation efforts in the City.
