COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Alex Fernandez
DATE:
September 17, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER THE CO-NAMING OF 12TH STREET FROM WASHINGTON AVENUE TO OCEAN DRIVE AS "PRIDE STREET."

RECOMMENDATION

Pursuant to Section 84-503(c)(2) of the City Code, I respectfully request that the City Commission refer to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee consideration of the co- naming of 12th Street from Washington Avenue to Ocean Drive as β€œPride Street.”

Twelfth Street serves as a significant and symbolic location within the City of Miami Beach. It has a long history of being the center of the LGBTQ community with the LGBTQ visitor center and gay-owned businesses in close proximity. It has also served as an entry to the 12th Street beach, popularly called the gay beach in Miami Beach. This area has become emblematic of inclusion, diversity, self-expression, and unity, and it represents a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

Currently, Section 82-503(c) of the City Code sets forth specific criteria for the co-naming of streets. In order for the City to proceed with co-naming 12th Street at Ocean Drive as β€œPride Street,” an amendment to Section 82-503 is required. Specifically, such amendment would authorize co-naming in recognition of communities that have made significant contributions to the City’s cultural, social, or civic life.

Upon adoption of such an amendment, the co-naming of β€œPride Street” would be consistent with the Code’s intent to celebrate and memorialize groups that have positively impacted the identity and civic fabric of Miami Beach
