BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please refer a discussion to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee ("PSNQLC") to discuss/take action regarding the feasibility of directing City administration to paint City bike racks in rainbow colors.
This proposal is in response to the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) recent actions forcibly removing rainbow crosswalks across the state, including the City of Miami Beach’s Leonard Horowitz-inspired rainbow crosswalk at 12th Street and Ocean Drive.
Given the symbolic importance of the rainbow crosswalk to our community and its role in honoring LGBTQ+ history and visibility, I would like the PSNQLC to evaluate whether painting bike racks in rainbow colors could serve as a meaningful and legally permissible alternative expression of community pride and inclusion.
I request that the PSNQLC discuss and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission on the feasibility, cost, and implementation considerations of this initiative, including potential locations, design standards, and community engagement. It may be useful to work with our Citibike partners to see if they might contribute to defraying the cost.
