C4 I REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE POTENTIAL IMPROVEMENT OF LIGHTING AT THE WEST LOTS TO ENHANCE PUBLIC SAFETY. Applicable Area:
COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please place on the October 29, 2025 City Commission agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (βPSNQLCβ) to discuss the City exploring and potentially improving the lighting at the West Lots in order to enhance public safety in the area.
Iβd like to request that we explore the possibility of enhancing lighting at the West Lots β eight (8) City-owned development parcels fronting Collins Avenue between 79th Street and 87th Street. Improved lighting at the West Lots could significantly enhance public safety in the area by increasing visibility, deterring illegal and illicit activity, and making the corridor feel safer for residents (and visitors) after dark.
Accordingly, I would request that the City Administration be prepared at Committee to provide information on potential lighting enhancements at the West Lots to include the following: 1.) the current lighting conditions; 2.) potential lighting improvements, to include energy-efficient or smart lighting options that align with our Cityβs sustainability goals; 3.) the City Administrationβs recommended lighting improvements; 4.) the approximate cost for the various lighting improvement options; and 5.) any available funding sources and/or grants.
