COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Alex Fernandez
DATE:
October 29, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION REGARDING INSTALLING AN INFORMATIONAL PLAQUE FOR THE BANYAN TREE AT BAYSHORE PARK IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH.

RECOMMENDATION

Please refer a discussion to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee ("PSNQLC") to discuss/take action regarding the feasibility of installing an informational plaque for the significant banyan tree located at Bayshore Park in the City of Miami Beach.

One of the largest banyan trees in the southeast United States, the Bayshore Park banyan tree is widely recognized as a living landmark, having stood for decades and witnessed the evolution of the surrounding neighborhood and the broader City. Its resilience through storms and longevity make it one of a small number of large banyan trees thriving in the United States, and a unique ecological and cultural asset to Miami Beach.

The tree’s presence in Bayshore Park exemplifies the successful adaptation of a remarkable species to Florida’s climate and urban landscape.

I request that the PSNQLC discuss and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission on the feasibility, design, and placement of an informational plaque to honor the banyan tree’s historical, cultural, and ecological importance to the City of Miami Beach.
