RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please place on the October 29, 2025 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss the feasibility of launching a farmersโ market pilot program on the City-owned West Lots.
The West Lots currently serve as municipal parking, house Ocean Rescue facilities, the Kitty Campus trailer, and include the new skate park, all which draw steady foot traffic from residents and visitors.
As the City continues to explore opportunities to activate underutilized public spaces and promote community wellbeing, activating these parcels with a farmersโ market could boost neighborhood engagement, support local businesses, and enhance public safety through positive activations of public space.
Additionally, after the Blue Zones readout in June when I met with renowned celebrity chef and Miami Beach resident Todd English, city staff and I have been working with him and his team to develop a shared vision for the โCity of Miami Beach Farmers Market curated by Chef Todd Englishโ.
This concept envisions a vibrant, world-class destination that celebrates sustainability, health, and culinary excellence. The proposed market would feature fresh, locally sourced produce, meats, cheeses, and artisanal goods, complemented by interactive culinary experiences such as live cooking demonstrations, farm-to-table opportunities where guests can purchase and enjoy food prepared on-site, and engaging live entertainment that fosters a sense of community.
In addition, while not a West Lots-specific initiative, Commissioner Bhatt and staff have also been in discussions with the Carillon team, who are actively pursuing a monthly market at their property, to explore collaborative opportunities that support the Cityโs broader goal of expanding access to sustainable and healthy food options. This initiative aligns closely with the Cityโs Blue Zones- inspired efforts to promote well-being and healthy living for residents and visitors alike.
