COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Tanya K. Bhatt
DATE:
October 29, 2025
TITLE:
DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION: UPDATE FROM POLICE AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENTS ON TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN NORTH BEACH AND TRAFFIC LIGHT SYNCHRONIZATION EFFORTS.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

ANALYSIS

Residents and stakeholders in North Beach have raised ongoing concerns regarding severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak commuting hours, weekends, and special events. These traffic conditions are negatively impacting quality of life, increasing travel times, and creating challenges for emergency vehicle access and pedestrian safety.

A contributing factor to these traffic issues appears to be the lack of effective traffic signal synchronization along key corridors in North Beach. Improved signal coordination has the potential to significantly enhance traffic flow, reduce idling and emissions, and improve overall mobility for residents, visitors, and businesses. The Miami Beach Police Department and Transportation collaborated, at my urging, to temporarily address the intersection at Indian Creek/Dickens and 71st Street. Even with this small intervention, we saw significant results. But this is a temporary fix and not sustainable for the long-term

The Miami Beach Police Department and the Transportation Department should be prepared to address: β€’ Current traffic conditions and congestion hotspots in North Beach; β€’ Status of any ongoing or planned traffic signal synchronization projects; β€’ Coordination efforts with Miami-Dade County and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), where applicable; β€’ Enforcement strategies and traffic management tools currently in use; β€’ Recommendations for short- and long-term improvements to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow.
