RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Hurricane Melissa has caused significant damage across Jamaica, displacing families, disrupting infrastructure, and impacting vital community resources. Miami Beach has long-standing cultural and familial ties to Jamaica, with many residents and city employees tracing their heritage to the island. This discussion invites the City Commission to explore how Miami Beach can offer meaningful assistance; whether through coordinated relief efforts, partnerships with consular officials, or community-led donation drives, to support Jamaica’s recovery and demonstrate solidarity with our Caribbean neighbors.

I would like my colleagues to be prepared to discuss and provide input on potential relief or partnership initiatives to assist Jamaica in its recovery from Hurricane Melissa.
