RECOMMENDATION
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
Please place on the October 20, 2025 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (the “Committee”) to discuss the installation of a new commemorative plaque adjacent to existing plaque celebrating the installation of the Pride crosswalk.
The proposed plaque would include a photograph of the original Pride crosswalk and a brief narrative explaining how the crosswalk—an important symbol of inclusivity and community pride—was removed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), despite the strong support and wishes of the residents of Miami Beach to preserve it.
The intent of this plaque is to document the community’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, while also acknowledging the unfortunate removal of a beloved public art installation. The plaque would serve as a respectful and informative companion to the existing commemorative marker, preserving the memory of the crosswalk and the values it represented.
The Administration should be prepared to discuss the feasibility, design, and potential locations for the proposed plaque.
