C4 AK REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE โ€“ DISCUSSION REGARDING THE STREAMLINING OF COMMITTEES. Applicable Area:

COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:
Commissioner Laura Dominguez
DATE:
December 17, 2025
TITLE:
REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE โ€“ DISCUSSION REGARDING THE STREAMLINING OF COMMITTEES.

RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Over the past several years, the City Commission has created a number of new standing committees to address a wide range of community concerns and policy areas. While these committees have provided valuable forums for public engagement and policy development, the growing number of committees has raised concerns regarding the strain on staff resources, the time commitment required of Commission aides, and the potential for overlapping responsibilities among committees.

ANALYSIS

This referral is intended to initiate a thoughtful discussion on how to ensure the Cityโ€™s committee structure remains effective, efficient, and responsive to community needs. Topics for consideration may include: โ€ข Whether certain committees could be consolidated or sunsetted; โ€ข The feasibility of implementing a moratorium on the creation of new standing committees; โ€ข Adjusting the frequency of committee meetings (e.g., quarterly instead of monthly); โ€ข Clarifying the role of Commission aides as liaisons to committees; โ€ข Ensuring that existing committees are the appropriate venues for addressing emerging issues. The discussion may also explore how to balance the communityโ€™s desire for engagementโ€” particularly on issues such as animal welfare, public safety, and neighborhood quality of lifeโ€”with the Cityโ€™s current staffing and budgetary constraints.
