BACKGROUND/HISTORY
ANALYSIS
Please refer a discussion to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee (“PSNQLC”) to discuss the impact on the Miami Beach Community Health Center of the Medicaid cuts in the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The legislation has been estimated to reduce Florida’s Medicaid funding by approximately $3.84 billion.
I would also like to discuss the potential impact of the current increase in health insurance premiums for those purchasing health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) the who may no longer be able to afford health insurance coverage.
These developments could significantly affect the ability of the Miami Beach Community Health Center to serve its current patient population and may result in the Center being overwhelmed with new patients who are uninsured or unable to pay for services.
While the City of Miami Beach currently funds $22,000 for the cost of MBCHC Public Benefits and Outreach and Enrollment Coordinators, I would like the Administration to be prepared to discuss and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission on possible steps the City could take to provide additional support to the Center to mitigate the potential public health and safety impacts of this development.
