R9 AN DISCUSS/TAKE ACTION β UPDATE AND DISCUSSION ON STREAMLINING THE CITYβS BUILDING PERMITTING SYSTEM. Applicable Area:
COMMISSION MEMORANDUM
RECOMMENDATION
Our residents and the community continue to raise concerns about the difficulty and lengthy timelines involved in navigating the Cityβs building permitting system. I would like to discuss with my colleagues what can be done to streamline the permitting process including the removal of any regulation not related to life safety requirements. While we must always uphold our obligations regarding life-safety requirements and adhere to those regulations imposed by the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County, it is clear that we need to make the remainder of the building permitting process much more efficient and user-friendly.
Accordingly, I am asking the City Administration to come prepared to provide the Commission with an update/overview of the current building permitting system, along with its recommendations on how that system can be made more efficient, streamlined, and easier for residents, contractors, and businesses to navigate. After our discussion, I hope the Commission will direct the Administration to commence any necessary actions to meaningfully improve the building permitting process.
